To a birthday card

Say thank you, and mention one thing about the card or your day. That’s all it needs.

  • Thank you so much for the birthday wishes! Your card made my day, and I’m so lucky to have you.
  • Thank you for remembering my birthday! It really meant a lot. Let’s celebrate together soon.
  • Your card made me smile all day. Thank you for always making me feel special.

To a group

  • Thank you all for the birthday love! I read every message, and I’m so grateful for each of you.

To a thank-you card

You don’t have to reply to a thank-you card. But if it touched you, a short, warm note back is a lovely surprise.

  • You’re so welcome! It was a joy to help, and your card made my week.
  • Thank you for your thank-you! It really touched me. I’m always here for you.
  • No thanks needed, but I loved your card. It’s going on my fridge.
  • I’m so glad it helped. Thank you for taking the time to write, it meant a lot.

To a sympathy card

There’s no rush and no right length. A short thank-you is enough, and it’s fine to reply weeks later or with a simple text. People understand.

  • Thank you for your kind words and for thinking of us. It means more than I can say.
  • Your card was a comfort during a very hard time. Thank you for being there.
  • Thank you for sharing your memories with us. They brought a smile on a difficult day.

  • I really appreciate you reaching out. Let me take a few days, and I’ll write back properly.

If you’re not ready to reconnect

  • Thank you for your kind card. I’m not ready to reconnect right now, but I wish you well.
  • I appreciate you reaching out, and I hope you’re doing well. I think it’s best for me to keep some distance for now.

Tips for replying

Questions people ask

Do you have to reply to a thank-you card?

No. A thank-you card is already a reply, so you don’t need to answer it. If it touched you, a short “You’re so welcome, your card made my day” is a lovely extra.

How soon should you reply to a card?

Within a week or two is ideal for birthday, holiday and thank-you cards. For sympathy cards there’s no deadline. Reply whenever you feel ready, even weeks later.

Is it okay to reply to a card by text?

Yes. For friends and family, a warm text is perfectly fine. For something especially meaningful, a card back shows extra care.

What do you say when you reply to a sympathy card?

Keep it simple: thank them for their kind words and for thinking of you. One or two sentences is enough, and it’s okay if it takes you a while.

How do you kindly say you’re not ready to reconnect?

Thank them for reaching out, say you’re not ready right now, and wish them well. Keep it to a sentence or two, without blame or a long explanation.
